The Batty Shaw Medico-Chirurgical Prize for outstanding contribution to Norwich Medical School shall be awarded to one final year medical student who has, during the course of their studies, made an outstanding contribution to life at Norwich Medical School, or more broadly to UEA.

University of East Anglia Learning, Teaching and Quality Office

  1. There shall be a prize awarded annually from the Norfolk and Norwich Med Chi Society to be known as The Batty Shaw Med Chi Prize for outstanding contribution to Norwich Medical School.
  2. The Batty Shaw Med Chi Prize for outstanding contribution to Norwich Medical School shall be awarded to one final year medical student who has, during the course of their studies, made an outstanding contribution to life at Norwich Medical School, or more broadly to UEA.
  3. The value of the prize shall be determined by the Med Chi committee, and is expected to be not less than £500.
  4. All medical students will have the opportunity to nominate up to two Final year medical students who they believe meet the following criteria: “a final year student who during their studies made an outstanding contribution to life at Norwich Medical School, or more broadly to UEA.” during March/April each academic year, as part of the annual student evaluation. Nominations should state in a maximum of 250 words why they believe that student is worthy of this prize.
  5. The prize committee (including the society Chair [or designated other], Treasurer, plus one member of Norwich Medical School academic staff) will consider all students nominated, and select up to five students to go forward to the second stage of selection. Those selected will be written to by the prize committee and asked to: a) Select two referees. One of those referees can be a student, and at least one must be a member of university staff (or honorary member of staff). References should be no more than 500 words long. b) Attend an interview with the prize committee. This is a chance for the committee to explore with short-listed candidates what they have been doing for UEA or the Medical School. The prize committee will review all references obtained and make a judgement based on those references and the interview. The prize committee will make a recommendation to the Norwich Medical School Finals Examination Board. The successful candidate should pass Finals, and be considered in good professional standing with Norwich Medical School.
  6. The prize shall then be awarded by Norwich Medical School on the recommendation of the Finals Examination Board.
  7. If no candidate is judged to be of sufficient merit, the prize shall not be awarded. 8. The prize shall be conferred at graduation. Acceptance of the prize is subject to allowing UEA to publicise as appropriate the success of the candidate.
